Strangers work in the same office building, owned by the same company.
A girl twirls a thick yellow ballpoint pen, taps a notebook full of urgent pink highlights against her hip - hurries to the elevators; work has yet to bore her, and she's childishly excited that a coworker is willing and even eager to help her out with the pesky report program. If only these elevators weren't so slow... And why does the up button have to be red, and the down one - green? One doesn't always go downstairs to leave, nor go upstairs to something tedious or tiring. She, for one, likes going up - passing by all the people she might get the chance to meet in the future, all the busyness, all the life. She can hear the pings of the moving elevator cars - which of the three sounds closer? She glances up at the indicators above the thick doors, notices two men chatting by the coffee room, pointedly looks away - she's passed by the younger one of them in the hall often enough to know that he works on her floor, in the cubicle area in which the windows face the garden; they've smiled at each other, but never said hello. She feels like she's intruding into his conversation by standing within earshot, and wouldn't it actually be rude to call unneeded attention to herself by waving? She becomes so concentrated on staring straight ahead at nothing she misses the heavy doors sliding open right in front of her until some person exits and skillfully twists to avoid an embarrassing crash. She realizes that, yes! she's running to see a coworker to ask all her questions, and steps over that horrid gap between the stable floor and the box that can move, pushes a button, swirls around to face the narrowing view of her floor, and - just as the doors gradually slide closed, catches the young man flash an attentive smile of acknowledgment.
A girl bashfully smiles to a boy of Pan's glee. She hugs a notebook and pen close to her chest, throws her head back - wonders at the ridiculously self satisfied expression on her reflection in the tinted ceiling mirrors of the elevator which takes her up. This is silly, she needs to wipe that stupid grin away - it barely feels polite to potentially subject others to such unchecked and random displays of contentment. Plus, she bets that smile makes men melt too.
Strangers sometimes intersect.

's submission: Flash Fiction Day2 - I actually wrote this story just today, but since it's the second completed one, it's getting posted prior to the two I've almost finished writing over the Independence Day Weekend.
(I think that the numbers in the title will reflect the amount of pieces I write, rather than the days I write them for - so it's easier to count in the end )
Word Count: 415
I wanted to divide it up into more paragraphs, but couldn't manage to anyhow.
I like capturing almost fleeting, but vivid, and at times pointless moments. At some point I'll try to write such a moment from several people's perspective - should be interesting

I like the character here, mixing youthful girlishness with the serious considerations of an adult in the workplace. It's a relatively unique mix, and I get the sense of a real person, even without too many details.
That's a rare thing.
